Virus fears: Over 2,000 trucks stranded at India-Bangladesh border

More than 2,300 Indian-origin trucks are stuck or stranded along the border between India and Bangladesh in the Petrapole-Benapole region nearly 100 km from Kolkata, as vehicle movement between countries has taken a massive hit due to local resistance and fears of a COVID outbreak.

Customs officials and other sources say that while 2,103 trucks — mostly loaded — have piled up on the Indian side waiting for clearance to unload stocks, on the Bangladeshi side 228 trucks are stranded at Benapole.

Petrapole, situated in West Bengal ‘s north 24 Parganas district, is the largest Indian land customs port and accounts for a bulk of India-Bangladesh trade.
