Seafarers still at sea as government delays plan on crew changeover and repatriation from overseas

Hundreds of frustrated Indian seafarers waiting anxiously on their ships at the outer anchorage of the country’s ports ready to disembark upon completion of their contracts and those stuck in similar circumstances in various parts of the globe owing to lockout restrictions had placed high hopes on the government promising some relief to help reunite with their families after months at sea.

Over the last few days, seafarers and their families have exerted pressure on the government to allow them to sign off from their ships, while the global shipping industry has been pressing for government support to encourage crew change in the midst of the raging pandemic by designating seafarers as “key workers” providing an “essential service”.
