Global container shipping lines based in India are facing the government head-on by failing to comply with a decision to waive the container detention charges levied by importers arguing that the instructions given by various authorities in this regard “were not legally binding on them.”

The Director-General of Shipping (DGS) and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has requested carriers not to raise container detention charges following a directive from the Shipping Ministry to encourage lockout restrictions for exporters and importers.
