Sagarmala is passe; Government begins work on new maritime vision

The Ministry of Shipping has started research on writing a new plan for India’s shipping industry for the next decade. This comes after the coronavirus pandemic shattered recently developed trade expectations and forecasts that provided the foundation for the Narendra Modi-led government’s flagship maritime initiative, Sagarmala.

A senior official in the government said the government is likely to employ the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) as a strategic partner to help draft the ‘Maritime Dream 2030’ by collaborating with some 14 working groups set up by the Ministry on the focus areas it recognizes.

“Shipping Minister Mansukh Mandaviya needs a clear vision for the maritime industry,” he said when questioned about the need for a fresh roadmap when an extensive proposal for the Sagarmala system for supporting port-led growth in the country was prepared in 2016.
