MSC deploys largest containerships to transpacific

According to analyst Alphaliner, the 23,756 teu MSC Mia, one of a series of the largest boxships ever constructed, was deployed ad hoc on the North Europe-Far East–US West Coast operation AE1/TP6 of the 2 M alliance.

The 23,000 teu ships were supposed to be deployed primarily in Asia–Europe trade, with the ships usually considered to be too large to be operated by US ports and 2 M typically deploys 13,000 teu vessels on the trade.

Alphaliner said in his weekly newsletter that it appears the deployment was made in a bid to resolve equipment shortages in the U.S. caused by the large number of blanked sailings following the Chinese New Year and coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19), which culminated in the closure of most of Chinese production in February.
