More rakes needed for moving essentials, Railways to fine freight clients for delay in freeing trainsLogYcode
The Railways has agreed to charge its freight customers for an unnecessary pause in loading and unloading their products as it needs to provide more rakes accessible during the lockdown period to transfer critical things around the world.
Previously the Railways had suspended the two forms of charges for these delays — Demurrage and Wharfage — for the duration of the lockdown.
Demurrage is imposed on freight consumers for the retention of some rolling stock until free time expired, while Wharfage is for not withdrawing merchandise from the railway premises until the free period expired.
The concern was that unlike in regular days, in the absence of such prices, consumers are in no rush to unload because they are not wasting income. So we have no alternative but to impose these charges on them until they clear our rakes, an official said.
