Indian seafarers fear job loss as government dithers on crew change in foreign waters

India fears incurring the wrath of the global shipping sector and missing out on seafaring employment to rivals including China, the Philippines and Ukraine as the government dithers a plan to rescue thousands of crew stuck on board ships at overseas ports, several of them many days after their contracts have been terminated.

About 30.000 Indian seafarers, 70% of whom operate on cruise liners, are stuck overseas, pending repatriation.

As the pandemic is quickly growing, cruise line owners have suspended services and these luxurious ships are now idling at ports or on the high seas.
