Indian Railways invokes force majeure moves 1 lakh wagons of vital goods in 4 days

Indian Railways has exercised force majeure for the duration from March 22 to April 14 during which no demurrage, wharfage, piling, stabling, suspension and land use fee shall be livable.

More than 1 lakh wagons of essential materials were moved by the railways in various parts of the country from 23 to 26 March about the same time.

‘A force majeure (FM) implies unusual occurrences or situations outside human influence, such as an incident defined as an act of God (like a natural disaster)’ clarifying that the spread of coronavirus can be deemed a natural disaster and the force majeure provision may be invoked, the railway ministry has agreed that the time from 22 March to 14 April should be handled under force majeure and none the following charges shall apply:-demurrage, wharfage, piling, demurrage in the case of private / jointly held stock, demurrage in parcel traffic, parcel traffic wharfage, retention charges in the case of container traffic, ground traffic charges in the case of container traffic, “the release says.
