IATA & ICS join hands to arrange crew change flights for seafarers; urge govts to help

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) jointly urged governments to take immediate steps to promote seafarers’ crew-change flights.

Regardless of the Covid-19 limitations, after several months at sea, seafarers have to continue their service on board ships, unable to be replaced after lengthy duty tours or to return home.

“Shipping is important for the preservation of global supply chains, but the current situation is unsustainable for the health and well-being of ship crews and the safe operation of maritime trade. Every month approximately 100,000 merchant seafarers have to be moved from the ships on which they work to ensure that they are secure.” said the release.
