Coronavirus: Private airports want to levy extra charge with airline fares

Agility, the global logistics company, has recently teamed up with Chapman Freeborn Airchartering to supply 287 CT scanning and MRI machines to Malé, the Maldives' capital via Dubai. Agility airlifted the cargo from different places in the USA, China, France, Japan and India into Dubai. The transport of more than 287 parts from five countries to Dubai was a problem for the companies as flight and space access was scarce due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Ministry of Health in the Maldives requested 41 tons of freight consisting of MRI, CT scanning machines and other health devices to be delivered to four separate hospitals throughout the island chain and atolls.

The Association of Private Airport Operators (APAO) urged the government to approve the charging of passenger facilitation as part of airline tariffs to cover operators ‘ increased operating expenses due to coronavirus outbreak.

The representative noted in a letter sent to the Ministry of Civil Aviation that the airport operators are now in a situation of serious financial difficulty and require relief/support to continue airport operations.

Meanwhile, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) tweeted “India’s private airports need to make a fact check of their proposal to introduce a new levy at a time when demand for passengers is plummeting due to the COVID19 outbreak.”
