Coronavirus: IATA calls out for global suspension of slot rules

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has called for the worldwide aviation authorities to promptly revoke the rules governing the use of airport slots for the 2020 season due to the impact of COVID-19 (the coronavirus).

“IATA data has shown that traffic on main Asian routes has declined and that ripples widely throughout the air transport network, even between countries without significant COVID-19 outbreaks there are precedents for prior suspension of the rules on slot use and we agree that the circumstances call for a waiver to be issued once again. We call on regulators around the world to help the industry prepare for today’s emergency and the network’s future recovery, by temporarily suspending the slot-use regulations, “said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s director general and CEO.
